Questions Clients Often Ask Me

Not sure what to expect? Here are a few common questions about the 12-week DBT Skills Group and what you’ll be learning along the way.

What exactly is a DBT skills group?

It is a structured space where you learn practical tools for handling difficult emotions, stressful moments, relationships, and everyday challenges more effectively. In this 12-week program, we’ll focus on four core DBT skill areas: mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Who is this DBT skills group for?

This group may be a good fit if you find yourself getting emotionally overwhelmed, reacting in ways you later regret, overthinking constantly, struggling to set boundaries, people-pleasing, feeling disconnected, or repeating painful relationship patterns. It may also be helpful if chronic stress, anxiety, or past experiences are still affecting how you respond to everyday life.

Is the workshop the same as individual therapy?

Not exactly. The workshop is focused specifically on learning and practicing DBT skills. DBT skills training is one part of comprehensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy rather than the same thing as a full DBT treatment program. The group gives you structured tools you can begin applying to your everyday life.

Will we be talking about trauma in the group?

This is a trauma-informed group, but the program is centered on building practical skills for your life today. The focus described for the workshop is learning how to manage emotions, tolerate distress, stay grounded, communicate more effectively, and create healthier patterns. If you have questions or concerns about what participation or sharing looks like, please reach out to me before joining.

Can I attend virtually, or is the group only in person?

Both options are available. You can participate virtually or attend in person at 8871 Ridgeline Blvd., Suite 110 in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.

What if I’m nervous about joining a group?

You don’t need to have everything figured out before you walk in. The group is intentionally kept small to help create a more personal, supportive, and engaging environment. The goal is to learn practical skills alongside other people who may be working through some of the same kinds of emotional and relationship challenges.

How do I know if this is the right next step for me?

If emotions feel hard to manage, relationships keep falling into the same patterns, boundaries are difficult, stress feels constant, or you simply want better tools for handling life when things get intense, this group may be worth exploring. You don’t have to wait until things are falling apart to learn skills that can help you respond differently.
